*kids in the hive* provides in-person PlaySpaces that serve Humboldt County, CA children and their families through FREE PopUps at the Arcata Plaza Farmers’ Market and select local events. The PlaySpace is also available to book for private events, parties, and festivals.
PopUp PlayBox
We’re excited to premiere a brand new community offering–
our PopUp PlayBox! This custom-built, freestanding structure
features six interactive sides and stands four feet tall.
Packed with engaging elements designed to
spark creativity and active play, it’s made especially
for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged kids.
It is also available for booking in the Humboldt County area.

Part of a nonprofit organization, *kids in the hive* offers free and sliding-scale resources to help children and adults play, have fun, be curious, and build regulation and social-emotional skills.
We offer a PlaySpace for kids in the Humboldt, CA area, a YouTube Kids channel and free, downloadable activities that can be completed with videos or on their own.
Since 2020, *kids in the hive* has produced
over 140 free videos that have been viewed
more than 65,000 times. Since 2023,
we’ve hosted nearly 8,500 kids & families
at our free Humboldt-area PlaySpa

Hi, I’m MAC!
(aka MaryAnn Clark)
For over 25 years, I’ve worked with kids of all ages
–teaching & mentoring in classrooms, camps, homes,
and volunteer programs. My background in filmmaking
led me to work with middle & high schoolers at U.S. camps, even starting a film program at a summer camp in Switzerland.
Things changed when I moved to Humboldt County right before the COVID pandemic. I started nannying young kiddos and noticed they often pretended to be animals—for fun (of course!) but also when processing big and uncomfortable feelings. This inspired me to create a YouTube Kids channel to help children (and families) build coping skills through fun, animal-inspired activities.
I’m currently studying early childhood education while working in Humboldt preschools and developing *kids in the hive*— a project that blends videos, PlaySpaces, and playful SEL learning. My goal? To help kids navigate tough emotions and tough times with resilience, joy, self-awareness, and a little imagination.
I hope to follow in the footsteps of my role model, Mr. Rogers, by bringing more play, love, and kindness into the world.
